Discipline, Pt 3Sin in the Church · part 10 of 14Rev. Ivan Foster · Sunday - AMTitus 1:5 · Sun Dec 9, 2007
LET US BE CLEAR ABOUT THE PURPOSE OF DISCIPLINE 1. It is much misunderstood. "For though I should boast somewhat more of our authority, which the Lord hath given us for edification, and not for your destruction, I should not be ashamed," 2 Corinthians 10:8. "Therefore I write these things being absent, lest being present I should use sharpness, according to the power which the Lord hath given me to edification, and not to destruction." 2 Corinthians 13:10. When exercised in accordance with God's Word it is for building us up not for pulling us down. 2. It often requires courage on the part those appointed to administer such. "Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear," 1 Timothy 5:20. "This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith," Titus 1:13. "These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee," Titus 2:15.
