Since the beginning of the new school year in September 2015, Rev Foster has been asked to speak at two morning assembly meetings each week. His theme for 2015-16 is DV, "Pictures of Christ in the Bible." Sixth Picture of Christ Isaac and Rebekah, Genesis 24. * The wonderful errand Abraham gave to his servant is illustrative of the outworking of God the Father's purpose in obtaining a people, a bride, for His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. * The servant and his manner of obeying Abraham's command is a picture of the gospel preacher at work. * Rebekah, of course, pictures for us the bride which through the preaching of the gospel is obtained for Christ. The charge given to the servant. "And I will make thee swear by the LORD, the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell: But thou shalt go unto my country, and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son Isaac," Genesis 24:3-4. * Notice the servant is not named here. The gospel preacher is nobody. It is the message he preaches that is everything! The great apostle Paul said of himself: "For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God" 1 Corinthians 15:9. Preachers (and preachers' wives) ever need to keep this truth before them It is likely that the servant here is the one mentioned by Abraham in Gen 15:2. " . . . the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus?" That would make the servant quite an old man since between Gen 15 and Gen 24 is some 56 years. He must have been about 80 years old. You are never too old to serve God!
