“And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance,” Acts 2:1-4.

Pentecost was the second of the three great Jewish feasts, celebrated at Jerusalem yearly. Pentecost was on the seventh week, or seven Sabbaths after the Passover. It was a grateful recognising of the wheat harvest. It takes place now between mid-May and mid-June. “And thou shalt observe the feast of weeks, of the firstfruits of wheat harvest,’ Exodus 34:22.

1. THE DESCENT OF THE HOLY SPIRT WAS THE BEGINNING OF A GREAT HARVEST.

As we study the early chapters of the Acts, we will see that many thousands of Jews were converted to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, He Whom they had rejected and crucified.

What mercy was thus manifested by the Lord.

2. I WANT YOU TO NOTICE THE LORD’S ‘SENSE OF TIMING’.

“And when the day of Pentecost was fully come,” verse 1.

The Lord has a set plan that involves all events and happenings. 

“But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,” Galatians 4:4. This was a “time appointed of the father,” verse 2.

“For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in,” Romans 11:25.

“That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him,” Ephesians 1:10.

These and many other such references indicate that the Lord is working to a pre-arranged schedule which He has drawn up and which cannot be altered by devil or man!
