We introduced our new study last week and pointed out that it was the faith of her father that brought this young girl life and blessing.
1. HER FATHER WAS MOST EARNEST IN HIS SEEKING OF THE LORD.
“He fell at his (Saviour’s) feet, and besought him greatly, saying, My little daughter lieth at the point of death.” He had not given up hope. He believed the Saviour could heal her.
Notice his reverence for the Saviour. “He fell at his (Saviour’s) feet”. This the place those who see Christ for Who He is, the Son of God, take! Most of the ‘rulers of the synagogues hated the saviour but not Jairus! He fell at His feet - the place of reverence. That is made plain in the Bible.
“For a certain woman, whose young daughter had an unclean spirit, heard of him, and came and fell at his feet,” Mark 7:25.
“And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment,” Luke 7:38. She had to stoop right down at the Saviour’s feet to do this!
“Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died,” John 11:32.
“Then they went out to see what was done; and came to Jesus, and found the man, out of whom the devils were departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid,” Luke 8:35.
2. WHEN THE NEWS GOT WORSE, THE LORD GAVE HIM HOPE.
“While he yet spake, there came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house certain which said, Thy daughter is dead: why troublest thou the Master any further? As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe,” verse 35.
While others thought it was too late for anything to be done, the Saviour told him to continue believing.
The Lord can do that which men do not believe is possible! The Saviour said to His disciples: “But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible,” Matthew 19:26.
There are many things men think impossible but it is not so with the Lord. The men on Mars Hill at Athens laughed when Paul spoke of the resurrection! “And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter,” Acts 17:32. They laughed because hey deemed it impossible for the dead to be raised.
Even amongst those who profess faith in Christ, doubts may be found - see 1 Corinthians 15:12.
But such is the great hope of the gospel!
“For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words,” 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18. There is nothing too hard for the Lord, hallelujah!
