(Introduction Part 3)
1. From Matt 13:55-56, it would appear that nothing unusual had been noticed by His neighbours about the Saviour.
They would have mentioned it here had they but they were showing surprise at the words and works of the Lord Jesus. “Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works?” Verse 54. If they had noticed evidence of His wonderful person earlier they would not here have so spoken. How many today, who have the opportunity of meeting the Saviour through preaching fail to see the wonder of His person?
2. His mother Mary, however, had noticed that he was an unusual child.
Mothers always do notice the way, and words of their children!
“And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart,” Luke 2:18-19.
“And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them. And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart,” Luke 2:50-51.
What we observe from the Bible and learn about the Lord Jesus we should take into our heart and ponder it. The ‘ponder’ means that Mary talked to herself about what she had heard and witnessed. She turned the matter over in her mind, seeking to fully understand it.
So ought you, boys and girls, to seriously consider the gospel that is taught to you every day here in school.
