Without faith it is impossible to please GodKICS Studies - Faith, Mighty Faith · part 5 of 27Rev. Ivan Foster · YouthHebrews 11:6 · Tue Jan 9, 2024

“But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him,” Hebrews 11:6.

This verse is closely linked to the previous one which tells us of Enoch and how he pleased God. An explanation of just how you may please God is given us here in this follow-up verse. It was not just Enoch who could please the Lord. You may also do so!

I. PLEASING GOD IS THE CHIEF DUTY OF HIS PEOPLE.

1. Few give thought to God never mind seeking to please Him! “There is none that seeketh after God,” Romans 3:11. It is said of those who crucified the Lord Jesus that they pleased not God, (1 Thess 2:15) All who reject the gospel and do not seek after the Lord are thus condemned.

Only the Lord Jesus could say: “I do always those things that please him,” John 8:29. “And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased,” Matthew 3:17. “In whom I am well pleased” indicates that Christ’s pleasing of His Father exceeded that of Enoch.

2. Boys and girls are explicitly told how to please the Lord. “Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord,” Colossians 3:20.

II. WE START PLEASING GOD BY COMING TO HIM

1. That is the action of faith. It believes the gospel and seeks the Saviour. “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest,” Matthew 11:28.

2. Faith will seek the Lord diligently. Here is what that means: “For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened,” Luke 11:10. It is a seeking until we get an answer!

III. WE ARE ASSURED OF REWARDS WHEN WE SEEK THE LORD

We are told that the Lord is “a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” The word ‘rewarder’ only occurs here and that highlights that the benefits of seeking the Lord are unequalled and unique. The word means ‘he pays wages’. Luke 6:38 tells of God’s way of ‘paying’ wages!

1. The rewards of seeking the Lord are immeasurable. “To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,” 1 Peter 1:4.

2. They are everlasting. “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life,” John 6:47.

Ever remember these words, girls and boys: “When a man’s ways please the LORD, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him,” Proverbs 16:7.
