“After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst,” John 19:28.
What the Lord Jesus was experiencing is something all of you can easily understand for we all know what it is to be thirsty, though not to the terrible degree that our Saviour endured thirst.
We are going to consider today:The True Humanity of the Saviour
The person of the Lord Jesus is not to be the subject of human speculation. It is as Paul’s says a ‘mystery’. “And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory,” 1 Timothy 3:16. It is something not obvious to human reasoning.
- The earliest prophecy dealt with this wonderful truth. DIVINITY. “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace,” Isa 9:6. HUMANITY. “Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: but made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men,” Philippians 2:6-7. “He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not,” Isaiah 53:3.
- Throughout His life amongst men Christ gave evidence of His humanity. Physical growth, Luke 2:52. Hunger, Matt 4:L2. Sleep, Mark 4:38. Weariness, John 4:6. Weeping, John 11:35. Now He experiences THIRST. Psalm 22:15, His body as well as His soul suffered on the cross
- Because of this, the Saviour sympathises with us in our sufferings. “Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people,” Hebrews 2:17. “For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin,” Hebs 4:15. “In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them: in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; and he bare them, and carried them all the days of old,” Isaiah 63:9. “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you,” 1 Peter 5:7.
