In this fourth section, verses 13-15, we will consider: the only hope of deliverance. This is our final study in this Psalm.
1. It is JEHOVAH arising. It was David’s only hope, it is Israel’s only hope and it is the only hope of God’s people still. “Arise, O LORD,” verse 13. The word ‘arise’ appears first in Gen 4:8. “Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.” That gives you the meaning of the word and what it is David is asking the Lord to do. So it will be in the end. Antichrist will arise but The Lord will ARISE for the help of His people. “And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming,” 2 Thess 2:8; Rev 19:20.
2. Great disappointment awaits the enemies of God and of His people. “Disappoint him, cast him down,” verse 13.
I cannot begin to explain the depths of the utter disappointment that awaits those who reject the gospel.
3. Note that David says the ‘wicked’ are used by the Lord. “The wicked, which is thy sword: from men which are thy hand, O LORD,” 13-14. This is a parallel to Isaiah 10:5, 37:26; Acts 4:26-28. God in His sovereign power uses even the devil and His agents to fulfil His holy will. This gives us comfort to know that the Lord controls His enemies and that they fulfil His will!
4. The portion of the wicked is what they have in this world. Verse 14. Eternity will hold no peace or joy for the unconverted.
5. How different it is for the child of God. “As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness,” verse 15. What satisfaction to have the hope of being forever like Christ. Php 3:20-21; 1 John 3:2.
