We are given the opportunity to view how the Lord reacts to the evil scheme spoken of in verses 1-3. The Lord does react to men’s sins though many believe He doesn’t care. We ought to remember two verses, Ecclesiastes 8:11 and Job 36:18.

Here is an unusual reaction. “He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision,” verse 4.

THE AMUSEMENT OF GOD

1. Does not this sound a solemn warning to the rebels! God is laughing at their defiance of Him and His laws. This is the very opposite of fear or anxiety or alarm. Man’s efforts do not threaten the peace and tranquillity of heaven.

2. How foolish men will feel when God laughs at them. It speaks of utter shame and humiliation! See 2 Chronicles 32:21, and the shaming of Sennacherib king of Assyria. At this present time, Russia is being ‘shamed’ on the battle field by the soldiers of Ukraine!

3. But worse was to follow, God speaks in wrath. Laughable and all as the rebellion was it would still bring God’s wrath upon the rebels.

4. But He acts as well as speaking against them. “ . . . and vex them in his sore displeasure.”

Listen to these words.

“For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. . . . . It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God,” Hebrews 10:26-27, 31.

“The sinners in Zion are afraid; fearfulness hath surprised the hypocrites. Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings?” Isaiah 33:14.

“For our God is a consuming fire,” Hebrews 12:29.

“Now consider this, ye that forget God, lest I tear you in pieces, and there be none to deliver,” Psalm 50:22.

“Thou, even thou, art to be feared: and who may stand in thy sight when once thou art angry?” Psalm 76:7.

“Who knoweth the power of thine anger? even according to thy fear, so is thy wrath,” Psalm 90:11.

There are many other clear indications in the Bible of the fierceness of God’s wrath against sin.

Oh that we would all take heed and flee from sin and the judgment it will bring in its wake.
