“The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool,” Psalm 110:1.
This is an age in which the enemies of God have relative freedom to oppose Him! They are not suppressed as they will be one day! Mark 5:1-13.
1. Few are aware of this. Many take the words of the angels spoken at the birth of the Saviour to describe this age. “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men,” Luke 2:14. But the age of peace and universal blessing has NOT begun. The ‘enemies of Christ’ remain very active. This is a day of ‘sorrow’ for the child of God, Matthew 24:8.
2. The devil and wicked men are not suppressed and subdued as they will be one day. “And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness,” 1 John 5:19.
Yes, there is a remnant in this world who own Christ as their Saviour but by far the vast majority of men ‘lieth in wickedness’, or under the power of the devil who is ‘the god of this world’, 2 Corinthians 4:4.
3. At this moment the Saviour is sitting at the right hand of His Father, awaiting the day when His enemies will be made a ‘footstool’ for His feet. This is a wonderful picture of the complete victory over His enemies Christ will one day enjoy. Joshua supplies a picture of this coming victory. What peace there will be then!
“And it came to pass, when they brought out those kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said unto the captains of the men of war which went with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them. And Joshua said unto them, Fear not, nor be dismayed, be strong and of good courage: for thus shall the LORD do to all your enemies against whom ye fight,” Joshua 10:24-25. See 11:23. “So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the LORD said unto Moses; and Joshua gave it for an inheritance unto Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. And the land rested from war,” Joshua 11:23.
That is how it will be one day for the Saviour and for all those who love and serve Him.
