“Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands,”verse 1.

This is likely one of the best loved psalms in the Bible. In our psalter it is called ‘the old hundredth’.

I. HERE IS A CALL FOR WORLD-WIDE PRAISE

1. For that reason I believe it is a ‘millennial psalm’. Not until the change Christ will bring about at His return, Rev 11:15, will the earth recognise and honour the Lord Jesus and be capable of joy and gladness and singing at His presence.
2. Today, this world “lieth in wickedness.” See 1 John 5:19.
3. It is impossible for it to obey the words of verse 1. What a wicked noise it makes at present, John 1:10-11. Rejection, defiance, mockery, blasphemy! See 1 John 2:15-18.

II. THE WORD TRANSLATED ‘JOYFUL NOISE’ MEANS A ‘TRIUMPHANT’ SHOUT

1. It was used of the ‘shout’ at Jericho. Joshua 6:5, 16, 20.
2. It was used of the ‘shout’ at Jerusalem at the laying of the foundation of the new temple. See Ezra 3:11.
3. The word appears as ‘shout’ in Ps 47:1 where the rule of Christ over the earth is celebrated. “For the LORD most high is terrible; he is a great King over all the earth,” verse 2.
4. It appears also in Ps 66:1. Here is Millennial victory, 3-4.

III. MAN CANNOT BE HAPPY WHILE IN REBELLION AGAINST THE LORD

1. The history of the world is one of tears and misery. Man was created in a state of perfect joy until sin entered. Shorter Catechism 17,“The fall brought mankind into/sin and misery.”
2. The tears caused by sin will continue forever. See Matthew 8:11-12.
3. Repentance and faith in Christ will bring joy. David spoke of the the joy of God’s salvation, Psalm 51:12.
4. Fulness of joy is found only with the Lord. “In thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore,” Psalm 16:11.
5. Heaven is named ‘the joy of the Lord’. Matthew 25:21.
