“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.”
These words give us David’s summary of his expectations regarding this life and that which is to come.
I. FAITH IN THE LORD JESUS PERMITS US TO HAVE CONFIDENCE IN HIS GOODNESS
David here speaks so assuredly. Note the words - ‘Surely’, ‘shall’, ‘I will’. It is the blessed privilege of the true Christian to be ‘certain’ about the safety of their soul and the mercy of God toward them.
II. DAVID ABIDING BLESSINGS FOLLOW HIM
“Shall follow me”. He did not have to chase after them. Matt 6:33. They followed him! The word ‘follow’ first appears in Genesis 14:14. We see that it is a following in a most persistent manner! No matter what our circumstances we can be sure of the attendance of God’s blessing. Hebs 13:5-6.
III. DAVID WAS SURE OF UNINTERRUPTED MERCY
“Shall follow me all the days of my life”.
1. It is not what we do that assures us of God’s blessings. God’s blessing will never leave us nor cease. They are unchanging and unchangeable!
2. Even when we sin, God’s mercy follows us. “I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek thy servant; for I do not forget thy commandments,” Ps 119:176; Romans 8:35-39.
IV. DAVID WAS CONFIDENT OF HIS ETERNAL DESTINY
“And I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.” The little word ‘and’ shows that David was not only sure of God blessing him here on this earth but that connected to this goodness was the blessing of an ‘eternal’ home in heaven.
Heaven is the ‘house of the Lord’. It is the house He has prepared for us. “I go to prepare a place for you,” John 14:2. “For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens,” 2 Corinthians 5:1.
I trust that you can say with David that it is well with your soul!
