“Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward,” verse 11.
David, having made comparisons between the Word of God and the earthly things chiefly treasured by men, he turns to the practical and personal beneficial impact upon those who believe and obey it. How gloriously functional is God’s Word - Gold and Honey and More!!
God’s Word makes us wise - 2 Tim 3:15, Dan 12:3, Psalm 119:97-100.
1. It gives us warnings.
The word ‘warned’ first appears in Exodus 18:20. There it appears as ‘teach’. The teaching of the Word of God serves to teach us, warn us of the many dangers in this world, of which we are ignorant and would therefore fall foul of and bring danger and hurt to ourselves and others.
Sin - it is something we would be unaware of were it not for the Bible. “Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster,” Galatians 3:24. “Sin is the transgression of the law,” 1 John 3:4. Also the outcome of sin, James 1:14-15. How few know this because they reject the Bible!
Satan. He is a murderer and liar, John 8:44. He is an enemy of man’s salvation, Luke 8:12. He is a clever deceiver, 2 Cor 11:13-15. He is utterly doomed and damned, Rev 20:10. These things we would not know but for the Bible!
Hell. It is the place to which the rejectors of God’s Word will go. Matt 11:23; Luke 16:22-23. It and all those condemned to it finally are cast into the place of eternal torment, the Lake of Fire, Revelation 20:14-15.
2. Furthermore, obedience of it brings great rewards.
“In keeping of them (the commands of God) there is great reward.”
There is immediate reward. Romans 6:17-18; Luke 5:24-25.
There are benefits for all that is ours. Genesis 22:18, 39:5; Psa 112:1-3.
There is eternal reward. John 3:15-16, 6:68, 10:27-28; Roman 6:23.
