“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge,” Psalm 19:1-2.
David did not only look after sheep in the desert. He also looked upward and about him. How few do that, either physically or spiritually! This world and its affairs are all they consider.
Were men to look upward what a revelation they would receive! It is a revelation written in the most beautiful script, bearing a most glorious message for all to read. It is a missive written by the Lord Himself.
I. HERE IS A GREAT DECLARATION THAT ALL SHOULD HEED.
Verses 1-2. “The heavens declare the glory of God.”
1. It is a concise message. It reveals and sets forth the glory of God in a manner that words fail to do. The word ‘glory’ means the wonderful power of God, the indescribable splendour of God. It is that which belongs to God alone! “And it came to pass, as Aaron spake unto the whole congregation of the children of Israel, that they looked toward the wilderness, and, behold, the glory of the LORD appeared in the cloud,” Exodus 16:10. This was one form of the manifestation of God’s glory. The heavens are another form.
2. It is a continual message. It is repeated every day and night. No matter where you are in the world it is there. Even in daytime something of it can be seen. Viewed from within a well the stars are visible in daytime.
3. It is a clear message. Yet, clear as it is, men misread it. Such is the wickedness of man’s heart that he wishes to deny the undeniable! “The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good,”Psalm 14:1. Only a fool can deny the clear message of the heavens.
Such is the spirit of this age!
4. It is a complete message. It sums up all the Lord would have us do! It demands the adoration of the Creator and an honouring of Him for His power and wisdom.
