“Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him,” Psalm 2:10-12.

4TH SECTION — THE RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE GOSPEL.

The only wise thing to do in the light of the truth we have considered in the previous verses is to yield to Christ. Man’s rebellion will not and can not succeed. God’s response to it declares this to be so. The foundation of Christ’s throne likewise shows that His kingdom may not be toppled. He is God’s Son and the heir to an inheritance promised to Him in His Father’s decree. By asking the Father He obtains that inheritance. All the resistance of man cannot stop that happening. 

Those that would stand in the way of His claiming His inheritance shall be broken like a piece of brittle pottery when it is struck with a rod of iron. 

Therefore, submission in faith and repentance is the only course that may be called wise. 

In these verses an invitation to submit to Christ is issued.

Consider:—

I. THE SUBJECTS OF THE INVITATION1. Those in rebellion. What a contrast there is between the heart of God and the heart of sinful man. God’s desire is the happiness, the blessedness, of His creatures, even those in open, wicked rebellion. Man’s desire is the crucifixion of God’s Son even when His presence amongst them was accompanied by many blessings and benefits! “For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life,” Rom 5:10. “And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled,” Col 1:21.

2. Those who hold positions of leadership in rebellion. The kings and judges of the earth are addressed. It has ever been seen that there is mercy for the most wicked of men. God’s tactic has been to save the chief of sinners, to raise the Lazarus. “But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound,” Rom 5:20.

3. In this gospel invitation there is an indication of the objective of Christ. He will bring the thrones of the world and their occupants under His rule. Those who join with Antichrist shall be broken in judgment while others shall be converted by the power of God.
