“And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?” Mark 4:40.
I. FAITH IN CHRIST IS WHAT WE REQUIRE WHEN WE FACE THE STORM
This is what the disciples lacked and why they acted and spoke so.
1. Faith will reveal to us that we are united to Christ. We are as indestructible as God! We are in the same boat as Christ. Faith sees that and fears no threat.
2. Faith will enable us to share His peace. He slept, verse 38. What a pillow faith is! “And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:7.
3. Faith in Christ assures us of a safe arrival on the far shore. Safe at last despite our fears and lapses. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life,” John 3:16.
II. IT IS INEXCUSABLE FOR THOSE WHO ARE PRIVILEGED TO MEET CHRIST TO HAVE NO FAITH
“How?” Explanation demanded.
1. They had heard the Word preached many times and should therefore have faith. The Word of God is the seed of faith. “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God,” Romans 10:17. Parable of the Sower, verses 3-20.
2. They had seen the power of Christ at work many times. Miracles recorded and the very many not recorded, John 20:30-31. These should have given rise to faith.
We have the testimony of centuries of miracles. The conversions, the lives rescued and changed. The services wrought for mankind as a result of the gospel. All should aid faith.
3. This is the question every sinner will face one day. Here with the disciples it was a matter of a LAPSE of faith. With the sinner it will be a question of the utter LACK of faith, 2 Thessalonians 1:7-8.
4. Men are without excuse.
“Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse,” Romans 1:19-20.
“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork,” Psalm 19:1.
How will you answer the question if you are not saved on that day?
