JONAH’S REFLECTIONS

Jonah’s thoughts in the wake of his backsliding are recorded here.

1. Self-reproach. 

“They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy,” verse 8. “Lying vanities” is a term used of idols. In this case it refers to the folly of Jonah preferring his own notions to God’s revealed will, 1:1-2. In leaving God who is the Fountain of Wisdom, he abandoned that wisdom for his own views!

2. Demonstration of true faith and repentance. 

“But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed,” verse 9. Back to sacrifice and obedience!

3. His triumphant shout. 

“Salvation is of the LORD.” He has returned to the true rock of faith. This is what the grace of God can do for a defeated, despondent soul. What a transformation from verse 1 to verse 9!

JONAH’S RESTORATION

1. Jonah’s preservation in the fish’s belly and his being cast forth on to the shore demonstrate the supernatural and miraculous nature of these events. 

The Lord prepared the fish, 1:17.  He told the fish to spew out Jonah on to dry land, 2:10.

2. It was by the word of God that restoration came. 

This event symbolises three things. One PAST, one ONGOING and one FUTURE. Regeneration - Brought up by the word of God from the depths and darkness of death, 1 Pet 1:23. Sanctification - Continual recovery from backsliding and sin, John 15:3, 17:17; Eph 5:26. Resurrection - That glorious event awaiting the people of God, 1 Cor 15:52-55.
