“Wherefore they cried unto the LORD, and said, We beseech thee, O LORD, we beseech thee, let us not perish for this man’s life, and lay not upon us innocent blood: for thou, O LORD, hast done as it pleased thee. So they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from her raging. Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice unto the LORD, and made vows. Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.” Jonah 1:14-17.
These four verses bring our studies in the first chapter of Jonah to an end. It marks the turning in the life of His disobedient servant.Please consider first of all:
I. EVIDENCE OF THE CONVERSION OF THE SAILORS.I believe that these verses show evidence of the conversion of the sailors on the ship who witnessed the mighty power of God first hand.
1. Their prayer. Note they earlier had each prayed to ‘his god’, verse 5. Now they pray to “Jehovah”, verse 14. Evidence of conversion, Acts 9:11
2. They feared the Lord. That means ‘reverenced’. They looked upon the Lord with new eyes.
3. They sacrificed and vowed to the Lord. verse 16. Surely speaks of a new relationship
