When Elijah departed this world for heaven, it must be remembered that the Lord God of Elijah remained. So often the people of God get their eyes upon the man of God and loss sight of the God of the man. It is was the Lord Who was the source and means of Elijah's greatness. Elijah's God still lives today and remains unchanged by the influences that changes us all. Elisha here takes up the cloak of Elijah and cries out: "Where is the LORD God of Elijah?" Elisha knew that the cloak symbolised the power of God which rested upon Elijah. The fact that the cloak had remained when Elijah went to heaven encouraged Elisha to take it up and cry out for a demonstrating of the power which had accompanied Elijah. God's word must and will continue today as it has done in the past. The doctrine that we have before us in this text is simply this: "A consideration of God's presence and workings with His people in the past will encourage us to look for like manifestations in the present."
