World's debt to a German monkBless God for LutherRev. Ivan Foster · Sunday - PMRomans 15:27 · Sun Oct 30, 2005
" . . . their debtors they are," Romans 15:27. Paul is encouraging the church at Rome to note the activities of the believers in Macedonia and Achaia in giving liberally toward the needs of the poor Christians in Jerusalem who had suffered much for the faith at the hands of their fellow-countrymen as 1 Thess 2:14 and Hebrew 10:34 shows. He adds a further argument to that of Christian charity why such kindness should be shown to the Jews in their trouble. He reminds his Gentile readers that they owed a great debt to the Jewish race for of them came the gospel of salvation. He argues that if the gentiles are partakers of the spiritual heritage of Israel then it behoves them to share with the Jews their temporal blessings. What a debt the world owes to the Jewish nation for of them came our blessed Saviour, Jesus Christ. In like vein, we may easily see that the world owes much to those whose labours under God brought the gospel stream to our feet. Foremost amongst such persons was Martin Luther, the German monk who was converted and led the front rank of those who contended for the faith in the 16th century. Tonight, we salute Martin Luther and bless the God who raised him up.
