What it Means to Call on the name of the Lord (Preached in Kilskeery FPC) "And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep," Acts 7:59-60. Man has a spiritual as well as a physical dimension. Death sees the separation of the two. While the body remains here to crumble away to dust, the spirit departs. For the child of God, the spirit departs to be with Christ. For the ungodly, it is a departure into hell's darkness awaiting the great day of God's judgment. Stephen shows us a believer dying and the record affords us much comfort about that experience which all Christians shall partake of with the exception of those who will be alive when Jesus Christ returns.
